On February 16, 1899, French President Félix Faure died at the Élysée Palace during an intimate encounter with his mistress, Marguerite Steinheil, who was nicknamed "La Pompe funèbre" by the press. He had taken an aphrodisiac and succumbed to a fatal congestion cérébrale. Marguerite fled undressed, and servants found him dead. A priest later joked that the president had lost his mistress, cementing her nickname.
