Violent clashes in northwestern Syria between security forces and fighters loyal to the ousted President Bashar al-Assad resulted in over 70 deaths. The clashes, occurring in Jableh and nearby villages, are considered the most violent attacks against the new authorities since Assad's fall in December. The new authorities, in power since a rebel coalition ousted Assad on December 8th, are facing challenges in restoring security. Security forces captured a former intelligence chief during the operation.
