‘A dream experiment’: our Australian icebreaker is on a crucial mission to Antarctica | Nathan Bindoff

As an oceanographer, I’m excited about the prospect of getting ocean, ice and climate data from a region where few observations have been collectedGet our breaking news email, free app or daily news podcastAs I write, Australia’s national icebreaker, RSV Nuyina, is steaming south-west from Hobart, heading to Antarctica on its first dedicated marine science voyage.Onboard are more than 60 scientists and technicians, many on their first research cruise, gingerly gaining their sea legs as the ship navigates multimetre swells and swirling Southern Ocean lows. The Australian icebreaker RSV Nuyina is undertaking a crucial marine science voyage to the Denman Glacier ice shelf system in East Antarctica. This region is a growing concern for sea-level rise, as the Denman Glacier, one of the fastest retreating in the Australian Antarctic Territory, could contribute 1.5 meters to global sea level rise if it melts entirely. The mission aims to investigate ice shelf and ocean interactions.
