Some 34% of motorists are more anxious driving on dynamic hard shoulder smart motorways, which can be turned into active lanes when traffic levels rise.
An AA survey reveals a third of drivers feel less safe on smart motorways than three years ago, with most wanting them scrapped and converted back to traditional motorways with hard shoulders. This follows the government's 2023 cancellation of new smart motorway construction due to safety concerns and a lack of public confidence, though £900 million was allocated for existing smart motorway safety improvements.
