Grace Afangideh, a 25-year-old University of Calabar graduate, tragically died in a road accident while traveling to her NYSC orientation camp in Ebonyi State. Despite her fears of road accidents and kidnapping, Grace chose to fly to Enugu and planned to complete her journey by road. However, midway, the bus she was traveling in collided with another vehicle, resulting in her immediate death. Grace’s family was left devastated, holding onto her NYSC-branded boots and cap as symbols of her unfulfilled potential. Her siblings continued to dream of her, insisting she was still alive. The NYSC has yet to provide full death benefits, with only the death certificate sent to her parents. Grace’s story highlights the dangers faced by corps members and the systemic lack of protection they often encounter.
