AFJC reports unprecedented rise in Radio restrictions in Afghanistan

The Afghanistan Journalists Center (AFJC) reported an unprecedented rise in restrictions on radio stations in Afghanistan, coinciding with World Radio Day. At least seven radio stations have been closed in the past year due to Taliban directives, and 22 orders targeting media have been issued since 2022. Restrictions include bans on women working at National Radio, broadcasting music, and interviewing Taliban critics. Six media employees, including three from radio stations, are currently imprisoned. The Taliban claims 234 radio stations are operating, but independent reports highlight ongoing challenges to media freedom.
