Alabama lawmakers are advancing legislation to regulate pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) due to concerns about independent pharmacy closures. The bill, passed by the Senate, aims to establish minimum reimbursement rates for community pharmacists and prohibit "spread pricing." Supporters say PBM practices cause pharmacies to lose money, while opponents argue the regulations will increase costs for businesses and employees. Similar legislation is being considered in other states.
