The Iditarod sled dog race in Alaska faces challenges due to insufficient snow, impacting its traditional route. Known as one of the toughest races globally, it is controversial, with critics deeming it outdated and involving animal cruelty. A 2016 documentary accused the race of promoting animal abuse. The race, established in 1973, has seen its start point relocated north multiple times due to snow shortages, including in 2017, 2015, and 2003. The 2024 race begins in Willow, with organizers planning a new route amid ongoing snow shortages linked to the climate crisis.
