Alex Wheatle, the Brixton Bard and award-winning author who received an MBE in 2008, died at 62 from prostate cancer. He survived childhood abuse at Shirley Oaks children's home and bravely spoke out, helping thousands of victims win compensation and triggering a public inquiry into abuse by Lambeth Council. His literary legacy includes "Brixton Rock" and "Crongton Knights."
