Almost half of young people 'trust' social media about politics despite the rise of fake news, poll reveals

A survey of 2,500 11 to 25-year-olds (pictured, file photo) by the Electoral Commission found 44 per cent think social media is trustworthy when it comes to learning about politics.

A poll by the Electoral Commission found that 44% of young people (11-25 years old) trust social media for political information, with 50% getting their political news from it (second to television). For those over 18, social media is the most common source (59%). TikTok is the most common social media platform for encountering political content (68%). The study highlights the need for better media literacy among young people, given the rise of fake news, and notes that most young people trust information learned at school (74%) and from parents (78%).
