Ambulances, helicopters and medical advice: Behind the scenes at one of Ireland's 999 call centres

Staff at the National Ambulance Service’s two call centres process around 1,000 emergency calls every day.

The National Ambulance Service in Ireland operates two call centers in Dublin and Donegal, employing over 230 staff who handle around 1,000 emergency calls daily. Call-takers follow scripts to assess the severity of situations, working 12-hour shifts to provide reassurance and guidance to callers. Emergency Medical Dispatchers then collate information and assign appropriate response vehicles, working in a fast-paced environment to manage multiple calls and coordinate emergency response.
