Amoc: Atlantic Ocean current that gives Ireland benign climate ‘may not collapse this century’, study finds

Current collapse would lead to much colder conditions in Ireland and northwest Europe

A new study suggests the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), which gives Ireland a benign climate, may not collapse this century despite global warming, due to stabilizing ocean processes like upwelling in the Southern Ocean. This contradicts previous studies suggesting an imminent abrupt shift. While the study found a weakening of the AMOC, it did not find evidence of a complete collapse in models assessing extreme changes in greenhouse gases and North Atlantic freshwater levels. Researchers emphasize the need for further study to understand interactions between ocean processes.
