ANDREW PIERCE: Why did troubled Labour premier cling on so long?

Obituaries of Wilson's former spin doctor Joe Haines, who died last month aged 97, claim the former journalist was one of the few who knew about the impending resignation in March that year.



Harold Wilson, the Labour Premier, unexpectedly clung to power for longer than anticipated. It was initially believed he resigned in 1976 due to looming Alzheimer's, but his son Robin revealed he had planned to resign four years earlier if he had won the 1970 general election.
