Gabon is experiencing widespread power outages that are undermining public support for the ruling junta led by General Brice Oligui Nguema ahead of the presidential election. Despite initial popularity for improvements in infrastructure and governance after a coup in August 2023, the energy crisis is fueling discontent, with some citizens facing arrest for documenting the impact of the outages. The government is attempting to alleviate the crisis through energy cooperation with Equatorial Guinea and a contract with a Turkish company.
