In the Sahel region, vaccination campaigns are significantly hindered by jihadist groups and military regimes, particularly in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. Challenges include the destruction of health infrastructure, restrictions on humanitarian work, and population displacement. Health workers have faced obstacles such as negotiating with jihadists to access villages, and Médecins sans Frontières had to suspend activities due to violence. Additionally, military governments exert pressure on NGOs, leading to increased risks for humanitarian workers. These disruptions have resulted in a rise in unvaccinated children, posing a risk of preventable diseases like polio and diphtheria.
