Breakthrough in prostate cancer treatment offers hope for erectile function

The method nearly doubles the proportion of men who maintain erectile function after prostate cancer surgery

A new surgical technique called NeuroSafe nearly doubles the proportion of men who maintain erectile function after prostate cancer surgery by preserving delicate nerves. A study at University College London found that 39% of men in the NeuroSafe group had no or mild erectile dysfunction a year after surgery, compared to standard surgery, where a greater proportion experienced severe erectile dysfunction. Researchers hope the technique, performed during surgery with on-the-spot pathology analysis, will become more accessible on the NHS.
