Brian Minter: Creating a colourful living garden fence is easier than you think

A living fence creates an unusual and beautiful screen between neighbours. It can also function as a pollinator haven and a home for birds

Brian Minter suggests creating a colorful living garden fence, a popular gardening trend for 2025, by using a diverse selection of flowering plants that bloom at different times. Considerations include pruning individual plants at appropriate times, accommodating the size of the garden, and using narrow-growing plants for smaller lots. Suitable plants include Forsythia, Spiraea arguta (Bridal Wreath), Bloomerang or Flowerfesta lilacs, Proven Winners Pillar hibiscus, and Ilex verticillata (deciduous holly). Installing a drip water system is also recommended.
