‘Britain has been my home for 14 years. Now I’m being kicked out – and I have to leave my sick mother behind’
Asma Khan, a 30-year-old woman who has lived in the UK for 14 years, faces deportation to Pakistan while her ill mother, Amna, is allowed to stay. Asma and her mother arrived in the UK in 2010 to escape domestic abuse in Pakistan. Asma’s asylum application was initially denied, and she has been fighting the decision ever since. The pair has been destitute and homeless for seven years, relying on charity support, and have been unable to work or access benefits. In 2023, they were provided with housing under a clause for those with exhausted asylum appeals. However, Asma has been barred from further appealing her case and is now ordered to leave, while her mother has been granted the right to appeal. Asma, who has been detained for removal twice before, is currently searching for accommodation where she and her mother can live together.
