Broadway's 'Wicked' welcomes Lencia Kebede, its first pionering full

Green tears were flowing when Lencia Kebede made history this week on Broadway, becoming the first Black actor to assume the role of Elphaba full time in the Broadway company of “Wicked.”



Lencia Kebede became the first Black actor to play Elphaba full-time in Broadway's "Wicked," marking her Broadway debut after touring with "Hamilton" and other productions. She joins a lineage of Black women who have portrayed the role, including standbys, understudies, and a West End performer. Kebede previously worked with Beyoncé and had initially pursued a career in law before transitioning to theatre.
