Nayib Bukele, the president of El Salvador, is closing the Chivo Pets veterinary hospital, opened in February 2022 and funded by Bitcoin profits, due to negligence involving animal mistreatment and abandonment at a municipal shelter. Bukele also announced the closure of the state-run Institute of Animal Welfare and the Polipet animal protection unit. He is requesting municipalities transfer animal shelters to specialized animal welfare organizations, providing them with $3 million monthly.
