Calls for King and William’s duchies to be abolished to create ‘national estate’

Anti-monarchy campaigners, including the group Republic, are advocating for the abolition of the Duchies of Lancaster and Cornwall, which currently provide significant private income to King Charles III (£27 million annually) and Prince William (£23 million annually). They propose replacing these duchies with a 'national estate' to benefit local communities, arguing that the duchies' assets should be used for public benefit rather than private gain. The Duchy of Lancaster, established in 1399, and the Duchy of Cornwall, created in 1337, are considered public property by Republic, which claims their revenue should support local communities instead of the monarchy. The duchies have declined to comment.
