Cashless society drives drop in children swallowing coins, researchers say

Analysis found far fewer children are now needing hospital procedures to remove objects from throats, noses and airways.

A study of English hospital data from 2000-2022 showed a 29% decrease in children requiring procedures to remove objects from their throats, noses, and airways between 2012 and 2022, coinciding with the increased use of cashless payment methods. Researchers suggest the decline in coin usage has contributed to this reduction, though other factors like improved child-proof packaging may also play a role.
