This increase of 28% compared to last year, despite the Labour government's pledge to end the crisis. The government has spent £150 million on combating smuggling networks but is also housing over 38,000 asylum seekers in hotels at a cost of £5.5 million per day, with the average cost per migrant soaring to £41,000. The government is hoping to alleviate the need to house migrants in hotels by building 1.5 million new homes by 2029.
