China, Russia ‘very likely’ to use AI to try and disrupt next election: CSE

A new report says cybercriminals linked to China, Russia and Iran are using generative AI tools like deepfakes to spread disinformation and target elections around the world.

A Canadian government report from the Communications Security Establishment (CSE) states that China, Russia, and Iran will "very likely" use AI to try and disrupt Canada's next federal election in 2025. These countries may use generative AI tools and deepfakes to spread disinformation, sow division, and push narratives aligned with their interests. While these countries are unlikely to undermine the overall integrity of the vote, they will likely target politicians and parties with phishing scams and hack-and-leak operations. AI is increasing election interference attempts globally, and foreign-generated material is often amplified by actors within the targeted state.
