Columbia’s Mahmoud Khalil felt he was being kidnapped as detention unfolded, lawyers say
Columbia student Mahmoud Khalil, a pro-Palestinian protest activist, felt kidnapped when federal authorities arrested and transported him from New York to Louisiana, according to his lawyers. Khalil's lawyers filed a lawsuit seeking his release, alleging he was handcuffed, shackled, and denied basic comforts. His lawyers also said that Khalil was deported because he was the "public face" of student protests on Columbia’s campus against Israel’s military actions in Gaza. Authorities detained him under a law allowing removal based on potential adverse foreign policy consequences. Khalil's lawyers said they were initially denied attorney-client-protected communications with him, and they claim the White House was involved in the case.
