Council calls for power to seize empty homes after thousands in central London revealed as unoccupied

Westminster council said it wants the power to seize properties empty for more than six months after spending £140million on temporary accommodation for homeless families

Westminster Council is requesting legal power to seize properties vacant for over six months to address homelessness and reduce the £140 million spent on temporary accommodation. Research reveals around 11,000 properties in central London are long-term vacant, with some unoccupied for decades. The council wants to update the law to make it easier for them to issue Empty Management Dwelling Orders (EDMOs) and have primary charge on the property.
