County set for higher council tax rise to help deal with future storms

The council wants to increase the permanent resources available to respond to severe weather

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council is proposing a 4.7% council tax increase for 2025/2026 to enhance preparedness for severe weather events, up from the initially planned 4.5%. This adjustment will generate an additional £220,000, reducing reliance on one-off funding and decreasing the draw from transitional reserves to £507,000 from £727,000. The schools budget will rise by 7% to £212m, with a 5% fee increase contributing £633,000. Leader Cllr Andrew Morgan highlights that this increase remains among the lowest proposed by other councils, while emphasizing significant investments in schools and social care. The overall budget stands at £668.12m, with a 4.8% funding increase from the Welsh Government. The proposal will be voted on by the full council on March 5.
