An India man developed tuberculosis complications after starting treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, which doctors believe were linked to an overactive immune response to a Covid booster.
A 47-year-old man experienced a rare case where his Covid booster vaccine reawakened a dormant tuberculosis (TB) infection, leading to tuberculosis immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (TB-IRIS). This is the first known case linked to a Covid booster. The man had no symptoms of TB before vaccination, but the booster strengthened his immune response, causing an overreaction that triggered severe TB symptoms. Doctors suspect the mRNA vaccine's immune response contributed to the syndrome. TB is the world's deadliest infectious disease, surpassing Covid as the top cause of infectious disease-related deaths in 2023.
