An image of two Irish news articles has gone global among anti-immigrant groups.
A side-by-side image of two conflicting headlines ("Dublin one of the safest cities in the world" - 2003 vs. "Dublin ranks among the top ten most dangerous major cities in Europe" - 2024) went viral on social media, often used by anti-immigrant groups to suggest immigration caused Dublin's alleged decline in safety. Far-right figures and, later, Conor McGregor, amplified the claim. The "dangerous" headline was based on a dubious study by a gambling company, and an analysis of crime statistics doesn't clearly support a definitive increase in danger. The headlines spread across multiple platforms and languages, often devoid of context and fueling anti-immigrant narratives.
