The IRS Direct File program, launched as a pilot in 2024 following the Inflation Reduction Act, allows taxpayers to file taxes for free online. While Secretary of the Treasury committed to keeping it active at least through the current tax season, the future of Direct File is uncertain because of criticism from some Republicans and tax preparation companies, who view it as a waste of money. The IRS accepted over 140,000 returns via Direct File in 12 states last season. A report indicates it could cost between $64 million and $249 million annually. The program was developed as a startup within the IRS.
