Jazz vibraphonist Roy Ayers has died. Inspired by Lionel Hampton, Ayers created a cool, danceable form of jazz, influencing hip-hop and other genres. His hit song, often associated with sunshine, was widely sampled and cemented his status as a cult figure in Black music. Ayers, born in Los Angeles in 1940, contributed to blaxploitation film soundtracks and influenced artists from Erykah Badu to Pharrell Williams, performing until late in life.
