Austria's "Digital Species Lexicon" has DNA-barcoded and archived one-third of the estimated 75,000 animal, plant, and fungi species in the country, using a short DNA sequence (usually the CO1 gene in animals) for identification. The project, coordinated by Szucsich, aims to create a digital identification guide and is now focusing on identifying groundwater fauna. The project prioritizes common, rare, and invasive species, having already completed the cataloging of dragonfly species. The data helps farmers improve soil health by identifying beneficial organisms.
