DVLA new £195 charge for car owners coming into force within days

Electric cars have not had to pay any tax on their vehicles for many years - but that is set to change in 2025

From April 1st, electric vehicle owners in the UK will be subject to Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). Electric vehicles registered between April 1, 2017, and March 31, 2025, will be taxed at the standard rate of £195 annually. Electric vehicles priced over £40,000 may also be subject to an Expensive Car Supplement, potentially paying up to £620 annually, which then reduces to £195 in subsequent years.
