EU leaders back major defence spending plan in response to ‘existential challenge’ of war in Ukraine

Taoiseach rejects suggestion that move poses a threat to Ireland’s military neutrality policy

EU leaders have backed a plan for significantly increased defence spending, potentially hundreds of billions of euros, in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which they see as an "existential challenge." The European Commission plans to borrow €150 billion to fund loans for member states' defence spending, potentially exempting it from budget deficit rules. Leaders also discussed increased military and financial aid to Ukraine, with concerns about potential withdrawal of US support. While most leaders agree on increased support, Hungary's Viktor Orban opposes additional military aid. Volodymyr Zelenskiy addressed the summit, thanking leaders for their support.
