Europe greenwashing with north Africa’s renewable energy, report says

A Greenpeace report accuses European countries of using renewable energy from Morocco and Egypt to "greenwash" their own economies, while leaving North African nations reliant on imported fossil fuels and bearing the environmental costs. The report highlights that European-backed renewable projects, which export clean energy to Europe, hinder Morocco and Egypt's ability to decarbonize their own economies. These projects also displace local populations and consume significant amounts of fresh water. Meanwhile, both countries remain net importers of fossil fuels, selling cleaner energy to Europe while using dirtier fuels domestically. The report criticizes Europe for externalizing socio-environmental costs to the global south and calls for Europe to reduce its consumption and build domestic renewable capacity.
