European visa waiver: when must I apply for an Etias and how will travel from the UK work

Extra red tape due to Brexit will not be mandatory for travel from the UK to the Schengen Area before 2027, I calculate

British travelers to the Schengen Area (most of the EU plus Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein, but not Ireland) will likely need an Etias travel authorization by 2027. Etias is an online permit system for "third-country visa-free nationals" (like the UK post-Brexit), costing €7/£6 and valid for three years. A transitional period of at least six months will follow its launch, where Etias will be recommended but not mandatory for entry.
