The Deutsche Bundesbank reported a 28% increase in counterfeit banknotes in circulation in Germany last year, with 72,413 fake notes removed, compared to 2023. Despite the rise, the financial loss decreased from €5.1 million to €4.5 million due to fewer high-value notes like €200 and €500 being counterfeited. Most counterfeit notes are easily detectable, with common examples including "MovieMoney" or "Prop copy" versions. The risk of receiving counterfeit money is low, with nine fake notes per 10,000 people in Germany and 16 across Europe. The Bundesbank warns against passing counterfeit money, advising instead to hand them over to authorities. In Europe, total losses from counterfeit money rose slightly to €26.2 million from €25 million.
