FG unveils gene bank to preserve indigenous livestock breeds

The Federal Government of Nigeria has established a Gene Bank to preserve the genetic makeup of indigenous livestock breeds, ensuring their sustainability for future generations. Minister of Livestock Development Idi Maiha announced this initiative during the 2025 ministerial press briefing in Abuja. The Gene Bank aims to maintain Nigeria's unique livestock breeds, which are adapted to the local environment and resistant to diseases. The government plans to integrate these breeds into modern livestock production systems through crossbreeding. The creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development, a first in Nigeria, is part of President Bola Tinubu's strategy to modernize the livestock sector, valued at N33 trillion. The government is leveraging technology to enhance livestock management and has attracted a $2.5 billion investment from a Brazilian meat processing giant. Additionally, the ministry is focused on improving livestock health and disease control.
