Former Iraqi prime minister returns to Baghdad despite security threats

Former Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi has returned to Baghdad for the first time in over two years despite ongoing security threats. Al-Kadhimi, who survived an assassination attempt in 2021, had been living in London and the UAE since leaving office in 2022. His return, at the invitation of current Iraqi leaders, aims to leverage his connections to address the country's economic crisis. During his tenure, he facilitated talks between Iran and Saudi Arabia, helping restore diplomatic ties. Al-Kadhimi became prime minister in 2020 following mass protests that toppled the previous government.
