Former Labour MP Mike Amesbury has prison sentence suspended

The 55-year-old was jailed for 10 weeks for assault after punching a man in the street.

Former Labour MP Mike Amesbury, who was sentenced to 10 weeks in prison for assaulting Paul Fellows in Frodsham, Cheshire, had his sentence suspended for two years following an appeal at Chester Crown Court. Amesbury, who pleaded guilty in January, was initially led to court in handcuffs and appeared in a prison van. His defense highlighted the public shaming and embarrassment he faced, and he spent three nights in prison. Amesbury, who has been sitting as an Independent since being suspended by the Labour Party, now risks being ousted if his constituents support a petition for a by-election. The suspended sentence means he avoids immediate imprisonment, though opposition parties have called for his resignation.
