Brendan 'Bik' McFarlane, a former senior Provisional IRA figure, has died at the age of 74. He served as IRA commander during the 1981 hunger strikes at the Maze prison. McFarlane was imprisoned for the 1975 Shankill Road bombing, escaped in 1983, was arrested in Amsterdam in 1986, and released in 1997. He was acquitted in 2008 of charges related to the 1983 kidnapping of Don Tidey after a prolonged legal battle involving the European Court of Human Rights.
