Gary Woodland receives PGA Tour Courage Award as he returns from brain surgery
Gary Woodland received the PGA Tour Courage Award for overcoming brain surgery to remove a lesion causing him to believe he was dying. The surgery in September 2023 involved removing a baseball-sized portion of his skull. Woodland, a U.S. Open champion with three other PGA Tour titles, credited his support system for his recovery and return to golf. The award includes a $25,000 donation to Champion Charities, which he chose alongside his wife, inspired by his partner Harris Barton, whose parents died from brain tumors. Woodland noted his daily efforts to manage his brain function also aid his golf performance.
