A small number of buildings were evacuated as a precaution
A major incident has been declared in Godstone, Surrey, after two sinkholes opened up on Godstone High Street. The first sinkhole, caused by a burst water pipe, appeared on Monday night and grew to at least 20 meters (65 feet) by Tuesday. A second sinkhole has now formed on the opposite side of the street, consuming a driveway. Godstone High Street remains closed between Oxted Road and Bletchingley Road junctions, with residents urged to avoid the area. Around 30 properties are affected, and residents are being supported with accommodation advice. Highways diversions are in place. Operations are managed by the Local Resilience Forum, supported by Surrey County Council.
