Google moves search service out of mainland China in 2010 – from SCMP archive

The US tech giant claimed its decision to ‘pull out’ of mainland China on March 21, 2010 was due to excessive internet policing.



In March 2010, Google moved its simplified-Chinese search service from mainland China to Hong Kong due to excessive internet censorship. While Google.cn redirected to Google's Hong Kong site offering uncensored results, the move had little impact on mainland users who still faced government censorship and often relied on proxy servers to access forbidden information.
