Government has ‘no plans at this stage’ to legislate for smacking ban in England

Education minister Stephen Morgan responded to calls for change by saying the Government wants to look at evidence from Scotland and Wales.



The UK government currently has no plans to ban smacking in England, opting to review evidence from Scotland and Wales where such bans are in place. This follows calls for England to align its laws with Scotland and Wales, granting children the same protection as adults regarding physical punishment. An amendment to the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill proposing such a ban was met with government resistance, citing the need for further evidence.
