Government to unveil cuts to benefits amid backbench discontent

The number of people in England and Wales claiming either sickness or disability benefit has soared from 2.8 million to about 4.0 million since 2019.

The UK government, facing backbench discontent, will announce welfare cuts aimed at reducing the rising benefits bill, including potential changes to the Personal Independence Payment (PIP). The reforms seek to get more people back to work and ensure the sustainability of the welfare system, with the benefits bill projected to rise to £67 billion by 2029-30. The government aims to cut welfare by £5 billion.
