Government vows to clean up Lake Windermere after beauty spot ‘choked’ by pollution

Environment secretary Steve Reed has vowed to ensure ‘only rainwater’ enters England’s largest lake

The UK government has pledged to clean up Lake Windermere, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, by ensuring "only rainwater" enters the lake and eliminating sewage discharges. A feasibility study by the Only Rainwater coalition will explore solutions. United Utilities will invest £200 million in wastewater treatment upgrades and reducing storm overflow spills. The government aims to use private investment and stronger regulation to upgrade water infrastructure, boost the economy, and create jobs.
