'Harder for children to buy paracetamol than a knife' warns Met Police

Met Police Commander Stephen Clayman has highlighted significant flaws in online age verification processes for purchasing knives, noting that it is easier for children to buy knives than over-the-counter medication like paracetamol. Knife dealers often acquire blades in bulk without scrutiny, which are subsequently sold illegally on social media. In response, the UK government is intensifying efforts to combat knife crime, including stricter monitoring of knife sales, mandatory reporting of suspicious bulk purchases by retailers, and increased jail sentences for those selling weapons to minors. Additionally, a new police unit is being established to prevent online knife sales from reaching the streets. Pooja Kanda, whose son Ronan was killed, has campaigned for stronger laws, emphasizing the devastating impact of knife crime on young lives.
