Horses being left to ‘rot and die in city estates’, Limerick TD tells Dáil

Micheál Martin says ‘agencies need to get stronger and be more effective’ on animal welfare

A Dáil debate highlighted the issue of abandoned and mistreated horses in Ireland, with Sinn Féin TD Maurice Quinlivan citing over 50 horses seen in public areas in Limerick. Owners reportedly abandon horses rather than seeking veterinary care, as buying new horses for €20-€30 is cheaper. Quinlivan criticized authorities for failing to enforce microchipping laws and noted over 1,431 wandering horses collected in Limerick since 2015, straining welfare charities. Fianna Fáil TD Pádraig O’Sullivan raised similar concerns in Cork. Quinlivan suggested a lack of enforcement in wealthier areas, comparing responses to those in less affluent regions.
