Housing land dezoned in Dundalk despite regulator’s intervention

The site, owned by Glenveagh, had been earmarked for some 500 new homes

Louth councillors voted to dezone residential land in Dundalk, blocking potential construction of up to 700 homes, despite recommendations from the planning regulator, who cited Dundalk's status as a regional growth center and the land's serviceability. The regulator urged the Housing Minister to intervene. The dezoning, initially supported by Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, Green, and Sinn Féin councillors but later opposed by some Sinn Féin members, was justified by some due to concerns over sequential development and sewerage services, though the regulator maintains that Uisce Éireann confirmed the land could be serviced within the local area plan's timeframe. An Bord Pleanála had previously refused Glenveagh permission for 502 homes on the land due to sewerage concerns.
